Victoria Stewart celebrates San Sebastián’s star foodie producers 

San Sebastián (translated as Donostia in Basque), situated in the Basque Country in northern Spain, is a particularly special city because it is filled with all sorts of people discussing, praising, criticising, sharing, making and eating food.

It is well known for being home to some of the world’s most highly accoladed chefs and restaurants, such as Azurmendi by Eneko Atxa, Arzak by Juan Mari Arzak and his daughter Elena, and Martin Berasategui.

But what is also incredibly important about it, which is brilliantly celebrated here, is its producers.

In a recent book ‘Basque: Creative Territory,’ essayist Mikel Zeberio writes that the region’s cuisine ‘makes use of local product and enriches them, with producers and creators leading the fight to ensure that our agriculture, livestock, and food production do not disappear.’
